Ron Vaughan believes that artistic ability is not a talent, but a learned skill requiring many years of practice and work. Pause, take a moment to examine his “work.”
His treasured Texas landscapes….fields thick with wildflowers, rough and winding roads, stately and mighty oaks; or snow-covered plains, prairies, and other rural scenes….are rich with detail. Or, are they?
Ron’s talent is the ability to borrow from the viewer’s psyche. In essence, one sees more than what is actually there. It is this style, this ability, to have the viewer fill in the details that Ron has worked hard at perfecting. He calls this style impressionistic realism.
In a small central Texas town, Ron lives surrounded by the rural scenes that he portrays in his paintings. Most of his work is done in oil, although occasionally he turns to acrylics, watercolors, and other media.
Much of his work is done in miniature.
Miniatures require the same technical quality and attention to detail that larger paintings do, if not more. The sheer nature of their size makes people want to touch them, hold them, examine them closely. It’s that sort of examination….that sort of intimacy….that Ron delights in seeing others enjoy. Few of his miniatures exceed 5”by 7” format, and most are much smaller.
Born in Goldthwaite, Texas, the son of two artists, Ron began drawing as a young boy, but not because of his parents’ encouragement. Instead, it was a grade school music teacher who convinced Ron that he could contribute more by drawing than by singing. He listened, and the result has been a lasting love affair with the canvas.
In the Mid 1960s, while working as a computer professional, Ron painted in the evenings as a means of relaxation. But, after a decade of painting and showing part-time, Ron decided to pursue art as a full-time career. His McGregor home also became his professional studio.
In addition to workshops, Ron has taught at a local community college, and upon occasion, teaches private lessons in his studio. Currently Ron’s paintings are displayed in galleries and juried shows throughout the southwest.
To add a little more to his biography, Ron’s computer profession began with his four years in the United States Air Force. After his military duty, he worked sixteen years in business and in the aerospace industry. He and his wife have been blessed with four wonderful children, now grown, with families of their own. The Vaughan family has expanded with twelve delightful grandchildren and now great-grandchildren.
